A Brief History of Bal Harbour and Where It’s Headed

Bal Harbour was envisioned to be the exclusive enclave of ultra-luxury people know today from its very inception. Founded by Robert C. Graham in association with South Beach’s Carl Fisher and Walter O. Briggs, the vision for this Oceanside paradise began in 1929.

Detroit-based real estate development corporation Miami Beach Heights started it all by purchasing raw land in 1929. Next, leading urban planners, Harland Bartholomew & Associates, were brought in to master-plan the affluent village. A tiny hiccup stalled plans during World War II; however, development began in earnest after incorporation on August 14, 1946.

Originally named ‘Bay Harbour’, the village was soon rechristened with a more appropriate “Bal” representing both the Bay and Atlantic. The upscale neighborhood got its first hotel, Kenilworth-by-the-Sea in December 1946 that set the standard for ultra-modern luxury. The following decade would see the addition of nine more world-class resorts along the beach, turning Bal Harbour into America’s Riviera. By 1953, Arthur Godfrey’s radio and television broadcasts from Kenilworth would put Bal Harbour on the map for dignitaries, celebrities, fashionistas and even presidents from around the world.

Come 1957 and developer Stanley Whitman would lay the foundation for one of the most iconic shopping destinations by purchasing 16 acres of land. Shunning all trends, the Bal Harbour Shops opened in 1965 as an open-air mall with lush landscaping and a parking structure. Its high-end tenants have included the first Cartier and Bulgari, the first Neiman Marcus outside of Texas as well as the first Louis Vuitton, Prada and Sergio Rossi outside of New York.

Staying true to Robert Graham’s dream, Bal Harbour has sustained its impeccable style and elegance through the eras. Every resort, hotel, restaurant, retail brand and residence addition is crafted to fit in with this urban village’s persona. A most coveted resort community, this exclusive hideaway for the rich and famous boasts of natural beauty, serenity and everything high-end to forever epitomize lavish beachfront living.
