A top-tier financial district and trendy social spot, Brickell is Miami’s most developed urban center by the bay known as THE place to live, work and play.

Life in Brickell

Living in Brickell, you’re in the largest international banking hub of the country and the second largest financial services center south of New York. Also nicknamed ‘Manhattan of the South’, this river-and-Bay-side neighborhood still holds onto its signature Miami fun in the sun vibe.

This is where you would begin the day with a suit-and-tie meeting. Catch a power lunch at one of the upscale restaurants close by. Discuss investment options at one of the many international banks. Shop for the latest at the mixed-use, retail paradise of Brickell City Center or two-block, open-air Mary Brickell Village. Wind down after work with happy hours at one of the trendy bars, lounges or cafés and enjoy an equally hectic nightlife scene. Or, take the Metromover to Wynwood, Coconut Grove or Downtown on the weekends. A complete, world-class live-work-play package is found in Brickell.

Brickell’s prestigious landscape features skyscrapers – business and residential – sprinkled with a small dose of mid-rises, low-rises, international banks, professional service firms as well as a few (expensive) Mary Brickell-era mansions. The area north of SW 15th Road is fairly financial (mostly around Brickell Avenue), while that southward is rather residential.

One of Miami’s fastest growing neighborhoods, a plethora of new developments - including condos, hotels and mixed-use projects - are under construction or in the waiting to make their debut in Brickell. Pricing varies widely, with opulent Bay-facing penthouses for the discerning to more reasonably priced condo options for young professionals sharing the same block.

Attracting business people and investors from around the world, Brickell is on the international map for real estate investment destinations.

Neighborhood Favorites

Brickell doesn’t disappoint with its extensive eat, drink and play options.

Shop – For years shopping has meant the Shops at Mary Brickell Village for residents. This is where you’d find boutique clothing to everyday groceries, exotic cigars to trendy jewelry and everything in between. Happy hours, variety of eats and spa treatments make sure you linger around a bit longer at this open-air Village.

However, the debut of Brickell City Center’s retail section has added a whole new chapter to shopping in Brickell. Anchored by a Saks Fifth Avenue, four levels of retail are made super-comfortable with a climate-control ribbon. Find international favorites to Miami flagships offering the best of clothing, jewelry, shoes, beachwear, Swiss watches, personal care, cosmetics, home décor and hand-crafted specialties. World-class restaurants, lounges and a farmers’ market make a great hangout after tiring shopping sprees.

There’s also a Publix Supermarket and Walgreens when sticking to a to-do list takes priority.

Eat – Eating out is taken as seriously as the business in Brickell. There’s a great variety of cuisines and options for every kind of taste and budget. The options are endless, but here is a starting point. The Edge Steak & Bar is a top favorite for its Sunday brunches, classy happy hours and unique dishes such as kangaroo empanadas, wagyu Australian churrasco and grass-fed filet mignon. The Big Easy Wine Bar & Grill brings South African fare, with their risottos, boerie bites and carnivore-friendly platters luring you back for more.

Get a taste of the best Mediterranean dishes at the deliciously affordable Zuuk Mediterranean Kitchen, waterside Crazy About You bistro and luxurious Marion café, market and bakery. For coastal Italian with a Mediterranean twist head to the Tamarina Restaurant & Bar.

Pizza heaven comes housed in Mister 01, while Michael Schwartz’s Fi’lia takes Italian to a whole new level. The River Seafood & Oyster Bar puts a modern twist on classic seafood, while Luke’s Lobster serves the meanest lobster rolls in town.

KOMODO does high-end Asian with style. Shimuja is a popular ramen spot. Graziano’s is for amazing Argentine. American Harvest is for times you need a healthy salad fix or fulfilling Cuban bowl. Pincho Factory serves mouthwatering burgers and Cajun fries. And, if you’re in the mood for something unusual yet affordable, head to SuViche for their unique fusion of Japanese and Peruvian.

Drink – Brickell sure knows how to let its hair down with happy hours and party all night. Blackbird Ordinary is the place for drinking and dancing the night away with its original Blackbird mix, whiskeys, tequila shots, handcrafted cocktails, happy hours and a dedicated DJ area playing beats from fresh local talent to well-known spinners.

The speakeasy RedBar Brickell does DJ nights to art-show openings and cocktails with equal gusto. Sidebar keeps the night alive with creative cocktails and live bands going into the wee hours.

The Casa De Monte Cristo by Prime Cigar & Whiskey Bar is an upscale lounge with an epic selection of cigars, a fully stocked bar and VIP room. For rooftop fun, the 50th floor Ultra Lounge at the Viceroy Hotel and Dolores But You Can Call Me Lolita are great picks.

A Brief History of Brickell and Where It’s Headed

William Brickell and Julia Tuttle co-founded the Brickell Financial district in the mid-1800s. William with wife Mary Brickell owned large tracts of land from Coconut Grove to the Miami River. They started by befriending the Native Americans by creating a trading post at the, now, Brickell Point and maintain a peaceful setting.

Their neighbor, Julia Tuttle brought East Coast Railroad and resort magnate Henry M. Flagler’s attention to Brickell by sending him Miami-grown fresh fruits when a harsh freeze destroyed crops around the country. Both ex-Cleveland residents, the Brickells and Tuttle, contributed land to the Florida East Coast Railway in order to put Miami on the map and materialize their vision for Brickell.

After her husband’s death, Mary Brickell took charge and became one of the most prominent real estate developers and managers for Brickell. By the early 1900s, lavish mansions were constructed along Brickell Avenue, under Mary’s direction, attracting the affluent and making up today’s Millionaire’s Row. This is the time when the iconic Villa Serena and Vizcaya Museum and Gardens made their debut.

Come the 1970s, and office towers, apartments and hotels started taking over the landscape - even replacing most of the historic mansions. What followed, was a growth spurt that has showed no signs of stopping ever since.

Moving a 100 years forward from Mary Brickell’s ambitions for this eminent neighborhood, Brickell is today’s most iconic business district. With more residential, retail, restaurant and mixed-use projects such as the Brickell City Center coming to conclusion, Brickell is transforming from the financial capital of the South to a world-class, live-work-play destination that is still one of the most premium pieces of real estate in Miami.
